This was basically a palette cleanser while I was in the final stages of getting the last piece finished. I got bored with the tedious parts of transferring and inking, so I more or less just said, "Screw this, I'm drawing a mermaid."
I never intended for it to be another honest-to-goodness finished piece, which would sort of defeat the purpose, but for what it is, it cleaned up rather nicely.
The hair gave me some trouble; I went online and researched underwater hair, but all my attempts to emulate the various reference photos just made it look chunky and plastered, so I more or less just said, "Screw this, I'm drawing a bunch of curls."
Giving myself permission to not sweat the details and just draw for fun really helped. Maybe I should do that more often.
The hardest part turned out to be scanning it: It took me a couple of tries in order to get the lines on the tail fins to show up properly, and even then I had to cheat it a bit in Photoshop.
